Meet the Robinsons

Meet the Robinsons is a computer-animated film and the 46th animated feature produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. In the United Kingdom, the 3D version was released on March 23, 2007. It was released in standard and Disney Digital 3-D versions in the United States and in its standard version in the UK on March 30, 2007. It is based on the characters and events in the illustrated book A Day with Wilbur Robinson, by William Joyce. The film originally had the same title as the book. The voice cast includes Jordan Fry, Harland Williams, Tom Kenny, Steve Anderson, Adam West, Tom Selleck, and Angela Bassett. The film is rated G by the MPAA. It was released on DVD-Video and Blu-Ray on October 23, 2007.

The film opens on a rainy night. A woman leaves her baby boy on the steps of an orphanage. Mildred (voice of Angela Bassett), the head of the orphanage, answers a knock at the door, and, seeing no one else outside, takes it in as one of the orphans.

Twelve years later, in the present, Lewis (voices of Daniel Hansen and Jordan Fry), the baby, has become an avid inventor. He has bad luck trying to get prospective foster parents to adopt him. Confident that his mother abandoned him against her will, he attempts to invent a memory-scanner that will give him insight into his past, reunite with his mother, and finally leave the orphanage. He keeps his roommate, Michael "Goob" Yagoobian (voice of Matthew Josten), up every night working, which causes Goob’s Little League baseball team’s performance to suffer.

At Lewis’s school science fair, arranged by his science teacher Mr. Willerstein (voice of Tom Kenny), Lewis is approached by a thirteen-year-old boy named Wilbur Robinson (voice of Wesley Singerman), who claims that he is a "time cop" from the future, and that a man wearing a bowler hat stole a time machine. The sinister Bowler Hat Guy (voice of Steve Anderson), for whom Wilbur is searching, sends Doris (voice of Ethan Sandler), a robotic hat with mechanical arms, to sabotage Lewis’s machine. A hyperactive lab scientist named Dr. Krunklehorn (voice of Laurie Metcalf) judges Lewis’s project. As Lewis begins demonstrating his machine, it explodes, throwing the science fair into chaos. Lewis runs out and leaves his machine, which Bowler Hat Guy steals.

At the orphanage, Lewis goes to the roof, crushed by his "failure". Wilbur appears and tells Lewis to go back to the science fair and fix the machine. Lewis replies that if Wilbur can prove himself to be from the future, Lewis will go back to the science fair and fix the machine. Wilbur agrees, pushes Lewis off the roof onto a flying time machine, and uses it to take them to the year 2037, thirty years forward.

As a result of soaring through a world of flying cars, clean cities, robots, and fascinating machines, Lewis finally believes Wilbur. Lewis then says that he wants Wilbur to take him back to the day he was left at the orphanage, so he can stop his mother from leaving him. When Wilbur refuses, Lewis grabs the steering wheel, but only causes the machine to crash. Wilbur is devastated; he explains that there are only two time machines in existence, both made by Wilbur’s father. One of these is the one Lewis has broken, whereas the Bowler Hat Guy has the other. The two make a deal: if Lewis fixes the time machine, Wilbur will use it to take him back to see his mother.

They take the machine to Wilbur’s family’s garage where Lewis meets Carl (voice of Harland Williams), a talking robot. Carl screams at the sight of him and runs away. Wilbur hides Lewis’ hair underneath a tropical fruit hat, telling him that his hair is a dead give-away that he is from the past, and swears to keep that a secret. Leaving Lewis in the garage, Wilbur reveals to Carl that the deal he made with Lewis was a lie, to buy him some time. Carl agrees to play along with the charade, even though he knows the truth will eventually catch up with him.

Meanwhile, back in the present, Bowler Hat Guy takes the memory-scanner to Invent Co., planning to pass off the invention as his own. Because he does not know how to switch it on, Bowler Hat Guy’s proposal is rejected. Bowler Hat Guy then goes to Lewis’s room to kidnap him, but finds an injured Goob there instead. Goob has been there since he returned from baseball, which he lost and so was beaten for losing by his teammates, though the coach (voice of Don Hall) assured him otherwise. Bowler Hat Guy, on learning of this, gives Goob a speech about holding the sadness inside his heart and converting it to rage. On the roof, Doris finds traces of the second time machine, and the two go forward in time to track down Lewis.

In 2037 Lewis meets Grandpa Bud (voice of Steve Anderson), an old man who always wears his clothes on backwards. Asking Lewis to help him find his dentures, Bud takes him on a tour of the house. Lewis meets the rest of the strange and fun-loving Robinson family, including Bud’s wife, Grandma Lucille (voice of Laurie Metcalf), and the superhero/pizza delivery guy, Uncle Art (voice of Adam West). Finally, Lewis meets Wilbur’s friendly mother, Franny (voice of Nicole Sullivan), conducting her frog jazz band. The lead frog, Frankie (voice of Aurian Redson, singing voice of Jamie Cullum), is shown to be wearing Bud’s false teeth.

Assured him that no one Lewis met knows that he’s from the past, a relieved Wilbur explains that his father is a master inventor and invented practically everything, coining the motto "Keep moving forward". Lewis mentions that his father was the only Robinson family member he did not meet, since he is on a business trip.

Bowler Hat Guy and Doris try to sneak into the house. Doris spawns a miniature bowler hat, which Bowler Hat Guy controls. This "Mini-Doris" finds and takes control of Frankie, but proves to be a bad choice for a minion.

During dinner, Lewis pretends to be an exchange student from Canada. Franny is extremely nice and Lewis finds himself loving everyone very much. When Franny goes to remove Lewis’s hat, Wilbur initiates a kung-fu-like meatball fight between Franny and Gaston as a distraction. Lewis says that he is an orphan and wishes that he had a family like the Robinsons.

For dessert, Carl is about to serve peanut-butter and jelly sandwiches with a machine similar to the one Lewis made earlier. When it breaks, Wilbur has Lewis try to fix it, in order to raise his confidence. Lewis fails, whereupon the entire family applauds, seeing it as an opportunity to try again.

Bowler Hat Guy takes the time machine to the Cretaceous Period and returns with a T. Rex, intending to use it as a pawn to lure Lewis out of the house. The entire family attempts to stop the T. Rex (later named Tiny by the family) (voice of Joseph Mateo) from harming them, but he corners Wilbur and Lewis. Tiny is about to eat Wilbur when Lewis throws a shovel in his mouth to stop him.

When Lewis remarks that he must go, Franny loses her composure and says that she wants to adopt Lewis, whereupon Wilbur quickly knocks Lewis’s hat off. When everyone sees his hair, they are horrified. Franny takes back her adoption offer at once and says Lewis must go. Wilbur explains the situation with the time machines and adds that he never meant to take Lewis back to his mother. Lewis runs away and Wilbur has no one else to trust him.

Alone, Lewis is approached by Bowler Hat Guy and Doris and is told to fix the memory-scanner in exchange for the chance to see his mother. Wilbur tries to stop him; Lewis, still angry, flies off with Bowler Hat Guy.

In a dark room, Lewis repairs the memory-scanner and explains how to use it. He is then tied up by Doris. Bowler Hat Guy turns on the lights, revealing that they are in Lewis’s old room at the orphanage. Bowler Hat Guy reveals that he is Goob grown up. He explains that after Goob lost the baseball game 30 years ago, he suffered long-term depression and remained an orphan. Over the years, Goob blamed Lewis for his misfortune. Simultaneously, Wilbur’s father invented Doris, which he rejected for malfunctions. Doris escaped and found Goob. The two of them then decided to steal Mr. Robinson’s time machine and go back in time to steal Lewis’s first working invention, all because Wilbur left the garage door open.

Lewis suddenly realizes that he is Mr. Robinson himself, and Wilbur's father. It is revealed that if Lewis does not invent the memory-scanner, the future experienced by him so far will not happen. Lewis realizes that his own attachment to his past will, if unbroken, ruin him just as Goob's fixation ruined Goob.

Carl and Wilbur rescue Lewis. Lewis then tells Wilbur that he knows of his own future. They are reconciled. Just as they reach the Robinson house, Doris attacks Carl. Bowler Hat Guy steals the memory-scanner and goes back to the past, and manages to propose the scanner again to Invent Co., where it is a success. The time line is therefore broken and Wilbur is destroyed.

The future is radically changed; Lewis finds the Robinson house empty. On the Memory Scanner's screen, Lewis sees that after taking credit for his invention, Bowler Hat Guy mass-produced Doris-like hats that enslave humanity. The original Doris then attacked her user and killed him.

Possessed by Doris hats, the Robinsons attack Lewis. Lewis climbs into the time machine as the family tries to push it off a ledge. Lewis suddenly fixes the machine and flies away; the entire Robinson house, now a giant Doris, chases after him. Millions of Doris robots also pursue him. Cornered by the Robinsons, Lewis angrily wishes that he had "never invented that stupid hat!" Realizing that he has the opportunity to fulfill this wish, he flies to the boardroom where Goob is about to take credit for Lewis’s invention. Lewis tells him that Doris will betray him, then tells Doris that he will never invent her. At that instant, she vanishes into oblivion.

Taking Goob with him, Lewis returns to the future. Since Goob realizes that Doris was never really his friend, the future is restored back to the way it was. Lewis explains his actions and tells Wilbur to adopt Bowler Hat Guy, only to find that he is gone. Lewis sees his checklist left lying on the grass, with all the previous objectives crossed out. There is a new entry, consisting of a question mark. Lewis finally meets his future self (voice of Tom Selleck), who finally convinces him to go back to the science fair.

Lewis returns, accompanied by Wilbur, to the night wherein Lewis' mother left him at the orphanage. He is about to talk to his mother as she puts the baby down, but stops, realizing that he already has a family. He slips on the stairs and hides, producing the noise that startled her. The mother leaves. It is revealed that it is Lewis who knocks on the door instead of his mother, and to which Mildred discovers the baby.

Lewis returns to the day of the science fair and bids Wilbur farewell, promising to never forget him. Lewis stops to see Goob’s baseball game. He wakes the sleeping Goob in time to catch the ball that wins the game, implying that Goob will never become evil in his own future.

At the fair, Lewis successfully demonstrates his machine to Dr. Krunklehorn. Images are displayed of her wedding to Bud, from which Lewis deduces that Dr. Krunklehorn, his adoptive mother, and Grandma Lucille are one and the same. He bumps into a young Franny, who says that she is training frogs to sing, against all expectations.

Lewis is adopted by Lucille and Bud. They move into a large building named the Anderson Observatory, which will one day be the Robinson residence. Lewis sees the empty room that will be filled with all his inventions and begins building the robot that will be Carl.
